Getting around in Alonissos PDF Print E-mail

Alonissos roads

There are now about 45km of paved roads on Alonissos providing decent road or track access to most of the island's beaches. A main road threads through the middle of the island linking Patitiri, Votsi and Gerakas. A crossroads at Tsolia Lakka, in the middle of the island, connects Agios Petros, Steni Vala, Glyfa, Kalamakia, Bambakies and Agios Dimitrios. There are tracks off both these roads leading to other beaches. In the north there is a forest dirt track off the main road at Kourti Lakka (about 1km north of Votsi) that passes through Agios Anargiri, Turkoneri, Megali Ammos and ends at Agallou Lakka.

You can also visit beaches and coves that are inaccessible by land. These trips can be combined with snorkelling trips and walking tours over the islands. There are many boat trips from Alonissos to the nearby islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros, and of course the adjacent island of Peristera. Head to Skyros town for the Archeological Museum and the remains of the ancient acropolis.

Patitiri

Patitiri means winepress in Greek, but due to a devastating bug named Phylloxera which eats the roots, the vines were destroyed during the 60s. It is still not possible to grow grapes in Alonissos. Patitiri is the main harbour of the island, despite that the beaches here are crystal clear and ideal for swimming. Patitiri boasts a wide selection of tavernas, restaurant bars and clubs as well as many gift shops.

History PDF Print E-mail

Findings in the area Kokkinokastro show that there was a human settlement on Alonisos over 100 000 years ago. Then, all the Sporades islands were connected, and what is sea today was valleys and lakes then. It is believed that some Pelasgian tribe lived on the island in pre historic times, and that there might have been Cretan settlers here during Minoan times. In ancient years until today Alonisos has been a farmer's island, with renowned wine and olive oil as main exports.
