Getting around in Skiathos PDF Print E-mail

In general

Skiathos is a relatively small island, covering an area of just 61 square kilometers. It is a mere 12 kilometers long and 6 kilometers wide at it's widest point. The more mountainous north of the island reaches a maximum altitude of 429 metres. Despite its diminutive proportions, Skiathos and has plenty of scope for exploring and sightseeing. The island is serviced by a regular and punctual bus service, though many areas - particularly those areas away from the south coast tourist resorts - are not serviced by public transport at all. Therefore, to see all that Skiathos has to offer it is essential to hire a car, motorbike or scooter. The main road on Skiathos goes from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries in the south west of the island via a tour all of the resorts and hamlets along the south coast. This is one of the few fully metalled roads to be found outside of Skiathos Town, with most of the island's interior roads being nothing more than gravel or dirt tracks. As much of the coastline is inaccessible from land, hiring a boat is the only way to see the many coves, inlets and secluded beaches that can be found on the island, particularly those on the north coast.

Beach activities

The variety and extent of Skiathos coastline make it possible for sea lovers to benefit from an infinite number of different places to swim, all of them lapped by warm, crystal clear water. In general the north side can get quite rough and, sometimes, windy so the beaches are not so suitable for children.

Skiathos town (Chora)

The capital of Skiathos is built amphitheatrically on the south-eastern tip of the island in a windless bay, full of simple white houses with tiled roofs and narrow streets. Because it was destroyed by German’s bombs during World War II, it was rebuilt and prospered; today almost the entire population of Skiathos is concentrated there. Because it is a very cosmopolitan little town, Skiathos Town has plenty of restaurants (Greek and international cuisine), tourist offices, shops (touristy, clothes and shoe shops), cafes, bars and clubs opened all night long and offering all kinds of music for everyone. Most of the entertainment is located in the main street Papadiamanti and on the seafront. Snack bars can be found in great quantity as well as luxurious restaurant such as Italian.

History PDF Print E-mail

Prehistoric findings on Skiathos tell us that the island has been inhabited since pre-historic times. We do not know exactly who lived here then, perhaps the Pelasgians. Skiathos has a tradition of shipbuilding, and together with the fertile soil it became an important resting place for expeditions and travellers. It is believed that both the Greek fleet against Troy, as well as Jason and the Argonauts made a stop here before sailing on.
